To laugh often and love much

To win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children

To earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends

To appreciate beauty

To find the best in others

To give of one's self

To leave the world a bit better

Whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition

To have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation

To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived...

This is to have succeeded.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

8.11.02 Galen and Barbara Rowell, very good friends of mine whom I never got a chance to meet, left us today. This strikes home that life is a frailty and our time here is only temporary. At least I'm comforted to know that Galen and Barbara selflessly spent every last waking hour doing what they thoroughly enjoyed: making the rest of us become more aware of the undeniable beauty of our natural surroundings. Their efforts have opened up worlds for so many of us, and their lives have made this a better place. They will surely be missed.

Answer: $400 of fishing tackle!

They're the only couple I know who spend every waking hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year , year-after-year in each other's company, and they both live and claim that they wouldn't have it any other way. God bless'em! There's a lot to be learned there.

1.16.02 I shovel my driveway for the first time as a homeowner! I was so overjoyed that tears welled up in my eyes. (sniff) (sniff)
